Back in the early1950s, Welburn Guernsey was subdividing an area of South Tampa between West Shore Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue. He developed a neighborhood, Guernsey Estates, of small affordable homes. In his free time, he formulated a plan for a retirement community that would hug the water of Old Tampa Bay along West Shore Boulevard. He named this adult community Guernsey City.
By 1957, the Friendship House was the center of social activities for the residents. Potluck suppers were held monthly and continue today.
